What You'll See:
The intent behind this evening’s effort was to give a lesson in finding elk in unfamiliar areas. Not only do we get a lesson in that, there’s a great lesson in calling cows when a bull is locked down with a large harem, as well. When trying to call the cows, patient persistence is key. In this sequence, Chris calls a few cows out of the larger group in hopes to sucker the bull out to come round them up, and shows how long that can sometimes take, and… how great camo can help you get away with getting stuck out in the open!
Setting the Stage:
After going through all the variables in where elk had been feeding and watering, how far they were traveling when heading to their bedding areas, wind direction, access, etc., Chris climbed to the top of a ridge to listen for bulls to start sounding off as evening set in. Little did he know that all the components he evaluated earlier would put him smack dab on top of a good bull and his large harem of cows as soon as he crested the hill!
Viewing / Listening Tips:
Like always, headphones/ear-buds are best to pick up on subtle sounds, but some of Chris’ calling can be a bit loud at times. Just use caution with your volume.
